Facing Rising Egg Prices in Gunungsitoli: In-depth Insights from Local Traders

Today, the increase in the price of purebred chicken eggs is a hot topic in the city of Gunungsitoli, located in North Sumatra. Approaching the holy month of Ramadan and Idul Fitri celebrations, a sharp increase in the price of egg trays was noticed in various traditional markets including at Pasar Nou, one of the oldest markets in the city of Gunungsitoli. Currently, the price of purebred chicken egg trays has increased to Rp. 57,000, which is much higher than the normal price, around Rp. 55,000 per tray.

Based on an interview with Ciles, a veteran egg trader at Pasar Nou Gunungsitoli, it can be seen that the spike in egg prices is directly related to the increase in demand for eggs ahead of the month of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. According to Ciles, the reason behind this increase in demand is because eggs are a staple food ingredient involved in the process of making typical Eid cakes which are very popular in Indonesia. "The price of eggs has increased, from the previous price of around IDR 55,000 per tray to IDR 57,000 per tray. "This increase is caused by delays in supply and also an increase in demand for eggs," he explained during a market survey on Wednesday, March 27 2023.

However, on the positive side, other basic goods such as cooking oil, rice and various types of basic necessities are still maintained at stable prices. Even though consumers have experienced an increase in the price of eggs, they can still breathe a sigh of relief because the prices of other necessities have not experienced the same increase.
